Response to Paul Wilson
- reakce na A weak showing from the Stubborn Ones, 2003, Prague Post, English
dopis nepublikováno, 2003, vyšlo k výstavě: Generační výsek, Galerie Tvrdohlaví, Praha
Dear sir,
I was given the article which you submited to Prague Post about the Generacni vysek show in Tvrdohlavy Gallery. I hardly ever respond to critisizm which is aimed on my works because I believe that on finishing painting I am done with my part. Yet, at the same time, I am concerned about "general level of thinking of art", and I can see that there are occasions when critics themselves must be criticised. The previous regime in this country nursed a specific kind of flamboyant criticism, so I might be oversensitive to it, I admit. We would often argued that the "screening" was just a Czech specialty, while in Western countries the cricisism was based on expertise and personality.
I have to say I found your article rather "Czech" in the above sense. I was amazed of ease with which you enjoy the power of word. I have four questions I am urged to ask you:
- How could you possibly know what I have done intentionally and what have not.
- What is wrong with kitchy colors? Talking of them in derogatory sense was perhaps common few decades ago. Since then the term kitchy colors seem to be used prevalently as a characteristic, rather then as an evaluation--the way you obviously used it. I noticed some unintentional fear of kitch in other articles of yours. You should not worry much about kitch, I think. You better be afraid of simplicistic formulae.
- How much is the kind of Japanese paper which Antonin Strizek used for his drawings.
- What is the difference between pastel and ink.
Yours sincerely
Vladimir Kokolia
