The Cindy Sherman retrospective at the Rudolfinum Gallery was the event of the year, as she explored every aspect of modern (wo)man's soul through her variously witty, touching and repulsive portraits of the self-as-other. Annie Leibovitz's ongoing show at Veletrzni palac presents not only her typical, iconic celebrity portraits but images of wartime Sarajevo and AIDS patients as well.

Vladimir Kokolia's show "Prsa" (Breast), at Manes, proved that the brush is as mighty as the computer mouse when it comes to mood alteration. His abstract paintings - claimed to reduce blood pressure and improve the body's immune response - had visitors in a trance-like state as they absorbed the implications of his seemingly haphazard paintings that plumbed the depths both of living cells and silicon chips in one universal vision. In looking for the meaning under the surface of things, Kokolia pays homage to the greatest Czech painter of them all, Frantisek Kupka, whose retrospective at Veletrzni palac was a blaze of disorienting, at times Fauvist, color.
